Chasing a headline Mythic can drain rare materials for a damage bump your build barely feels; in Season 15, the smarter return often comes from keeping a working Unique until you know exactly what the next upgrade fixes. Treat Diablo 4 gear as a progression chain, not a ladder where every useful item must become something rarer.
Does a Unique still earn its slot?
A Unique's value is more than its item power. If its effect enables your core attack loop, stabilizes resources, or keeps you alive through a damage window, replacing it can make the whole character worse, even if the replacement has stronger headline stats.
That utility can last from early build assembly into endgame. A tested Unique may remain useful while you tune Legendary affixes, learn boss patterns, and find out which equipment slot is actually holding back progress. The often-missed benefit is consistency: fewer failed runs mean more productive time in the content you can already clear.
Do not feed a core item to the Horadric Cube just because the recipe is available. The conversion is costly, applies to the same gear slot, and produces a Crafted-tag Mythic; only one item with that tag can be equipped. The result is not simply a stronger copy of the Unique you put in.
Why a plain Legendary can be the better budget choice
The underappreciated option is a well-rolled Legendary in the slot your build needs most. Guides often spotlight Mythics because their fixed effects are easy to showcase, while a Legendary with the right affixes can quietly solve a defense or resource problem at much lower material cost.
This approach pays off during the transition from functional build to serious Pit and Lair Boss testing, especially for players with limited crafting materials or an incomplete gear set. It is not a substitute for a Mythic effect that defines your build. It is a way to avoid spending on a slot that is already doing its job.
Choose the upgrade that fixes a real weakness
Compare immediate slot conversion with keeping your Unique and reinforcing the weakest part of the setup. The better choice depends on what your character fails to do, not on which item sounds rarer.

Test before you spend
Use demanding content to identify the problem. The Pit exposes sustained damage and defensive gaps, Lair Bosses test single-target output, and large Waking Nightmares can reveal weaknesses hidden by ordinary dungeon runs. If resource generation is already failing, a stronger item in another slot may not help.
Keep any Unique that enables your main damage or resource loop until a replacement has been tested.
Inspect every equipment slot and name the single weakest one before crafting.
Run difficult content to separate a gear problem from a rotation or build problem.
Save rare materials when the proposed Mythic does not change damage, survival, or activity pace.
A reliable order is functional Legendary setup, tested Unique, difficult-content checks, then a targeted Mythic decision.
