U4GM Looks at Torture and Choice in GTA 5

帖子 由 Anonymous 1 »

In Grand Theft Auto V, "By the Book" is the mission that catches players off guard. It starts as another FIB assignment, then turns into something far more uncomfortable. Michael De Santa is sent to find a suspected terrorist, while Trevor stays behind with Ferdinand Kerimov, a frightened informant known as Mr. K. For players browsing GTA 5 Accounts, this mission is often remembered less for its shooting and more for the uneasy questions it raises about power, obedience, and state violence.

A Mission Built Around Pressure

The mission works because the player is split between two very different forms of control. Michael watches a crowded beach house from a hillside in Chumash, trying to identify Tahir Javan from a few small details. Trevor, meanwhile, is pushed into forcing information from Kerimov inside a warehouse on Dutch London Street. The contrast is deliberate. One character is asked to make a careful decision with a rifle, while the other is trapped in a room where every choice feels ugly. You quickly notice that the information could have been gathered without such cruelty, which makes the scene harder to dismiss as ordinary action-game drama.

What Players Need to Notice

Michael's section is less about speed than observation. Javan is surrounded by party guests, so the player has to wait for useful clues instead of firing at the first possible target. The details arrive one at a time, and each one narrows the search.

Watch for the man with the bushy beard.
Check who is smoking a Redwood cigarette.
Use the handedness clue to confirm the target.
Take the shot only after the description matches.

The Scene That Sparked Debate

Trevor's interrogation sequence became one of the most debated moments in the game. The player is shown several tools and is expected to use them while Kerimov gives up information. That interaction matters. It does not merely show violence in a cutscene; it places responsibility in the player's hands. Some people read the scene as a sharp criticism of official cruelty and the way institutions hide abuse behind procedure. Others felt that making the player carry out the actions weakened that criticism. Both reactions explain why the mission stayed in public discussion long after release.

Trevor's Choice

After Michael identifies Javan and completes the assassination, Steve Haines orders Trevor to dispose of Kerimov. Trevor refuses. He frees the injured man, drives him toward Los Santos International Airport, and talks openly about how pointless the entire process was. Kerimov had information, and he was willing to share it. The violence achieved nothing except fear and damage. That decision does not turn Trevor into a hero, but it gives the mission a strange moral tension. For players exploring GTA V Accounts, "By the Book" remains memorable because its strongest moment is not the kill, but the refusal to carry out one more order.
